“I’m Jessica Hoshi, but you can call me Jessie!”

A strong girl with the powers of light and fireJessica Hoshi is a cheerful, optimistic, and slightly silly 14-year old girl who is just starting high school. She lives on the south shore of the lake in Tree Shores with her parents: her father, Tadashi, a fisherman, and her mother, Kinako, a seamstress.

She is extremely friendly and outgoing, and looks forward to high school as a big adventure, even though she is a little nervous about having to leave her friends from junior high school. Jessica can sometimes seem distracted, especially in a large group, but she is also easily capable of several conversations at the same time. She has a remarkable aptitude for introducing people, and is responsible for dozens of friendships among people she knows. Because of her keen innate social sensibilities, Jessica is extremely perceptive about other people’s moods and personalities.

Although she sometimes acts silly, Jessica is actually very bright. She is very knowledgeable, especially in her favorite school subjects of music and ancient history. Only her lack of enthusiasm for other subjects prevents Jessica from being a 4.0 student. Jessica is extraordinarily lazy about school subjects she doesn’t like, and does only the minimum amount of work necessary so she can move on to subjects more interesting to her.

Jessica the Musician

Jessica has played saxophone since third grade, and by the time she reaches high school, she has a soprano (her favorite because she thinks it’s cute), alto and tenor, and she uses a hand-made wool neckstrap made and embroidered with her first name for her by her mother.

She quickly impresses most members of the high school’s music program with her ability to transpose different keys of saxophone music, even while sight reading. Even though Jessica maintains she “always forgets the chords and stuff,” she can play full-range scales in every minor and major key on saxophone without music, and improvises brilliantly on almost every instrument she plays, especially saxophone, flute and wind synthesizer.

Soon after she plays her first notes in summer marching band practice, several of the older band members recommend to Mr. Factor, the band director, that she be allowed to audition for the upper class jazz band, even though membership is usually reserved for sophomores and older.

Jessica finds even the most common things both interesting and entertaining. She also has a habit of reciting lists out loud right in the middle of a conversation, usually starting with “let’s see, there’s…” She is very impulsive, and is always enthusiastic about almost anything new, which is why Jessica has many interests and hobbies.

She also attends an after-school Japanese class. After complaining at first about “going to school after school” (mainly because her mother suggested it), Jessica finds she really enjoys learning a new language. She especially enjoys the honorifics, which she immediately begins incorporating in her everyday speech along with several other random Japanese words from time to time, sometimes a little inaccurately.

Jessica the Sport Fisher

strong girls epic adventure stories chapter book enchantmentJessica enjoys going fishing with her father any time she can. Even though she isn’t very patient, her father has taught her a great deal about the lake and the different kinds of fish in it. Jessica can fish with both nets and lines, and can even fly fish a little. She is looking forward to going deep sea fishing with her father someday.

At the age of nine, Tadashi entered Jessica in a weekend freshwater fishing competition. Even though she was the youngest contestant, she won, catching a 12-pound trout on the first day near the northwest tributary of the lake. This inspired Jessica a great deal, so her father gave her her own set of tackle, which Jessica learned to use very quickly fishing for catfish from the shore of the lake closest to her house. Not long after winning the fishing competition, Jessica passed a boating safety course and earned a swimming and water safety certificate from the community center, and is eagerly waiting for a chance to take SCUBA classes.

Jessica’s Crafts

Her mother has taught her quite a bit about sewing and crochet, and Jessica thoroughly enjoys going to the fabric store with Kinako to search for obscure bits of colorful cloth they can work together to make into crafts projects. Jessica has also learned a little about cooking from her mother, but since she is not very good at detail-oriented work (unless it is musical), Jessica’s attempts to follow recipes and patterns often fail spectacularly, which is a practically endless source of entertainment for her.

Jessica’s trademarks are her bright yellow tennis shoes, which she thinks go with everything.
