Ranko is a rambunctious show-off, and she would be the first to tell you so. She is very talkative and jovial, and within minutes of meeting someone will have selected a permanent nickname for them. She is generally well-behaved, but always adds a little of her own interpretation to the rules. She has an extraordinarily aggressive personality, is fiercely independent and competitive, and is a natural leader.
Ranko the Competitor
Through years and years of competing with her best friend Tara Blaylock, Ranko has become a spectacular athlete. Although she has picked up many sports, her favorites are rollerhockey and freestyle rollerblading, where she competes on equal terms with both boys and girls teams. Ranko and Tara have somehow always found themselves on opposing teams through volleyball, baseball, hockey, freestyle rollerblade racing, ice skating, and even a little tennis.
One year the Tree Shores City Rollerhockey league put Ranko and Tara on the “Knights” where they rang up a 15-1 record and five scoring records between them. Tara had most goals in a season, most goals in the playoffs and most points in a game. Ranko had most goals in a game and most overall points in the playoffs.
Ranko and Tara also joined a combination volleyball and basketball league together not long after joining the rollerhockey league. When asked by Ranko’s mother why they were joining yet another league, Tara replied “we’re only in one other sport right now!” It was there the two friends met their match in a very quiet and polite 6′5″ transfer student named Irina Dobreczowski, who Ranko immediately nicknamed “Ski.”
The three girls joined the same teams in both leagues, and won every single game they attended with the help of two other girls named Nora and Rachel. The five girls together named themselves “the blue shirt starters” in honor of the blue t-shirts they were given by the league that doubled as their uniforms. They all became the best of friends and made plans to try and get to the same high school together.
Ranko the Rock and Roll Star
By the time she joins the marching band, Ranko has learned only through listening and sounding out chords, to become an excellent acoustic and electric guitar player. Like Jessica and the other members of the school band, Ranko is a rather accomplished musician. Ranko is also the only person Jessica knows with perfect pitch, something which Jessica finds particularly fascinating.

Although Ranko’s chosen instrument is guitar, Jessica encourages her to join the Tree Shores High School Marching Band where Ranko, true to her personality, decides to play crash cymbals.
Ranko has set up a soundproofed studio of sorts in a garage off the back alley near her mother’s diner. There she can often be found playing along with various artists’ music using a multi-track sound system to add her guitar or bass part. Ranko is very happy to crank the volume too, much to the delight of the other kids in the neighborhood, but not quite so much with the other business owners and nearby houses.
Ranko’s favorite songs are among her mother’s collection of 50s rock and roll albums and singles. She can play along with most of them, because she can pick up just about any chord progression or solo riff with a few minutes of listening and playing along on one of her guitars. Almost the instant Ranko meets Leila, the two begin formulating plans to get Ranko’s amps and Leila’s 18-piece drumset in the same studio for a jam session.
Ranko lives in downtown Tree Shores with her mother and little brother.
