Hair the color of a new morning. Eyes the color of Highland emeralds. Freckles that dance with her smile. A golden ring that burns with the flames of courage and the pure heart and fierce soul of the Irish Queens of old.
There can be no doubt Jessica Halloran is a classic Irish lass. She is a continual source of joy and optimism for all those around her. Her powers as an Ajan Warrior reflect her key role as the heart of her fighting team. Although she doesn’t have the physical strength or speed of some of the other girls, she does have one indispensable power, and that is her ability to bless and strengthen others.
The Warrior’s Duty
Jessica unwaveringly respects the law. Even if it is unjust, Jessica will reluctantly respect and follow it until she can find a way to change it. If it crosses the line into evil, however, Jessica will fulfill her personal duty first. The Sunrise Warrior will always seek to return lost items to their owners, including any treasure or wealth she acquires.
At the same time, there are many things Jessica can’t do without diminishing her power. Dawnsong’s keeper cannot lie or mislead others. She eschews subterfuge, surprise attack, laying in wait, poisons, snares or traps. She prefers to defend rather than attack. She avoids killing. She will always interpose herself to protect others.
Jessica always keeps her word.
Enemy of Evil
One of Jessica’s most important powers is the ability to detect evil on a subconscious level. She can’t read minds, but in the presence of true evil her intuition will eventually lead her to its source. This makes it extraordinarily difficult for hostile creatures or enemies to carry out their dark plans in Jessica’s presence. Her intuition is extraordinarily powerful. Given enough time, she will discover the motives and identity of any who threaten the innocent.
Because of her nature as a force of goodness and purity, Jessica radiates an aura of hope everywhere she goes. Her native blessing causes her to glow with a soothing golden light at will. In Jessica’s presence, it is nigh unto impossible for anyone to be affected by a curse of fear. This is true even if Jessica is asleep or unconscious.
Jessica’s aura does have one inconvenient drawback, however. Evil creatures can detect goodness in her in exactly the same way she can detect their evil. Jessica cannot conceal her purity or aura of hope either, as this would be an act of subterfuge which she can’t commit.
Jessica is immune to any power or magic that unnaturally affects the mind. This means she cannot be hypnotized, charmed, possessed, repelled, soul-trapped, paralyzed, made susceptible to hostile telepathy, turned or affected by a curse of fear. She is also totally immune to disease, magical or otherwise. She is naturally resistant to all types of curses, and can cleanse both disease and curses with her healing magic.
Because of her unique role and abilities, Jessica is positively lethal to the undead, and intelligent undead in particular. Her enemies frequently make the mistake of underestimating their adversary, only to watch their commonly-used tactics fail and leave them vulnerable to rather sudden defeat.
The Minstrel’s powers are not limitless, however. Because of the nature of her battle magic, Jessica’s powers require both mental and physical endurance. Intense use of her abilities can cause her to become weak and disoriented. In extreme circumstances, this can cause some of her magical abilities to lose their energy and subside.
Dawnsong
One of the forms of the Sunrise Warrior’s weapon is the last of Ajanel’s skyblades. It is a hand-and-a-half longsword forged from an extremely rare magical alloy called celestium, and shaped to a balanced edge by the intensely focused rays of the sun itself. The weapon was originally created to be carried by a champion in defense of the shining Ajan kingdom and its people. There is no known power that can break Dawnsong’s blade.
Jessica is able to draw powers from her weapon that have never been seen or recorded before. Even the most learned scribes in Aventar cannot explain this ability. The more truthful, honorable and virtuous Jessica is, the more her powers grow.
The Ajan Warriors’ guardian Reina believes Dawnsong adapts itself to the strengths and personality of its keeper. Since the sword was originally meant to be wielded by a man trained in the arts of single combat and outfitted in heavy armor, it is likely the powers formerly available to the sword’s wielder were consistent with what they expected: more attack power, faster parries, more endurance, the ability to anticipate danger.
Now that Dawnsong is in the hands of a teenage girl with different priorities and advantages, the sword’s battle magic and powers have changed. Instead of adapting itself for an aggressive role, it instead reflects Jessica’s bubbly personality and joyful charisma with battle magic to match: a blade that catches fire, protection from fear, greatly enhanced intuition, better endurance when using her priestess abilities, and so on.
One of the sword’s most formidable powers lies in its celestium blade. As a magical alloy, celestium is not only capable of sustaining incredible permanent enchantments, but it is also capable of physically deflecting hostile magic directed at its keeper. This means Jessica has the power to turn aside magic spells directed at her or those she is protecting. Like her ability to cure diseases, this requires an enormous amount of mental and physical strength.
Healing
Since Jessica’s battle magic is geared to amplifying the power of others, it comes as no surprise she would have the ability to heal wounds, diseases and curses. Her own innate blessing, for example, acts as a continuous low-grade aura that will, over time, fully heal cuts, abrasions, bruises and other minor wounds. If she focuses her power, Jessica can intensify this ability and heal more serious injuries, various diseases and less powerful curses.
Unlike her friend Talitha, Jessica can cast healing spells very quickly, often instantaneously. Although they don’t have the raw life-giving energy of Talitha’s magic, a keymaiden’s spells can make the difference between an incapacitated comrade and someone who can get back in a fight. Jessica can use her healing on any creature, including animals, exotic magical beasts and even creatures from other planes of existence.
Chance
Jessica heals Chance after he steals a vital clue to the plot against the Crown Princess of Gacenar. He then rescues her from the bandits sent to discover what she knows about Chance’s whereabouts. It doesn’t take long for them to become an inseparable and highly effective team.
Chance protects Jessica from harm. Jessica makes Chance virtually immortal.
Teko
Jessica’s pet songbird is a sha-ri, a magical species that shapeshifts with Aventar’s seasons. In his winter form, Teko becomes a strong white raptor similar to a snow owl. His spring form is a golden songbird. His summer and autumn forms haven’t been seen yet.
Because he was rescued by Jessica, Teko is fiercely loyal. He is fond of apples and crunchy food, and is fascinated by anything mechanical like clocks or objects with gears or wheels.
Teko has the power to make magical flowers appear in his beak. Each of his flowers have different magical effects, some of which are quite beneficial. Although he cannot talk, he seems to understand human speech to a point. Teko can also benefit from all of Jessica’s powers, including her blessings and auras.
Chocolate
It was not long after Jessica’s arrival in Aventar that she discovered an enchanted garden not far from the farmhouse she and her friends were using as temporary shelter. There, Jessica found a proud stallion who she named Chocolate. Horse and rider immediately bonded, and with Chocolate’s help, Jessica was able to defeat an evil hag and a marauding goblin king.
Jessica and Chocolate’s connection is more than just that of owner and pet. The two can often sense each other’s intent and respond to each other’s emotions. Chocolate is quite strong and quick, and responds swiftly in battle. Like Teko, Jessica’s charger can benefit from all her powers, including healing. When blessed, Chocolate can outrun nearly any other horse, even those of the Gacen Royal Guards. With Jessica aboard, Chocolate is fearless, and will obey the Sunrise Warrior’s commands without hesitation. If she is attacked, Chocolate will always come to Jessica’s defense, and naturally Jessica will always protect him in turn.
Chocolate is also quite fond of apples, which occasionally causes disputes with Teko which Jessica must mediate.
Battle Strategy
Jessica is the team generalist. She has many different powers, which makes her extraordinarily versatile and able to fit in to nearly any combination of other warriors. When matched up with the more offensively minded girls like Shannon or Ranko, Jessica serves well as a backup defender and healer. When paired with more defensive warriors like Talitha or Cici, Jessica provides the offensive balance and can be a formidable source of amplified healing and protection.
The Sunrise Warrior’s natural ally is Talitha Casey, whose healing powers are second to none among the Ajan Warriors. With the two girls healing, blessing and casting protective spells on each other, the Forest and Sunrise Warriors are almost invincible. They also make the most effective advance scouts. While Shannon O’Keene has much better senses and tracking ability outdoors, when it comes to figuring out what’s in a dark cave, Jessica and Talitha are peerless explorers.
